Q: From what I know, you have always been an Entrepreneur right from the age 17. And then you founded one of the biggest family magazines in Dubai “Mother, Baby and Child”. Tell us about how did the idea happen and how you went about making it the successful company that it is today. Share with us the story of how did it all start. The struggles, the breakthrough and then making it big!
A: I have always wanted to do and be greater and achieve more than those around me. My parents believed in me so much, especially my father who believed I would achieve something very special and do great things in life. To discipline me, he would send me money in University in small amounts that wouldn’t sustain the sort of lifestyle I wanted to live. Motivated and not allowing this ordeal to derail me, I began to work as a promoter/hostess at various corporate and consumer events, slowly turning into an agent for companies. I then created a freelance company called Lion Events, ironically enough. I began to make a lot more money and also became a Master of Ceremony at numerous events. Then one day I met the wonderful, inspirational and larger-than-life Dominic De Sousa, my soon to be Business Partner at the time. We clicked instantaneously and vibed; we then decided to pursue our shared passion of charity and CSR into a publication called H.E.L.P. (Help Everyone Live Peacefully). After the website was completed, and furthermore, no published magazine as of yet, I diverted the attention to producing a family publication instead, since I found the CSR one not to be very successful. Mother, Baby and Child Magazine came into fruition, thanks to the inspiration and motivation I had from my first born, then Davaughn. A new mother, I had all the determination to put together a powerful publication and events community that inspired and empowered mothers. Mother, Baby and Child Magazine became the most popular magazine in the UAE. With numerous TV and radio appearances and interviews for both myself and the publication, it was inevitable. Having inspired many mothers out there, it felt very much at home. Tragically, Dominic passed away in the end of 2015, which pushed me to leave the publication and begin Lion MEC (Media, Events and Consultancy) alongside Family Tree under the Media umbrella. It was a difficult time for me as I also just went through a difficult divorce. Having had extensive experience in the media, public speaking, marketing and events fields, I felt empowered and further inspired as a single mother; I knew it was the perfect time to start the company and media platform. Thankfully enough, with all the hard work we achieved over a short period of time, we are now very recognized and have become extremely popular in the market, helping families across the UAE with a supply of news, credible information and regular updates. Further aiming to inspire and empower, the soul purpose of the website is to uplift and support families, hence the slogan of the Family Tree movement I created – “every family’s soul mate.”
Q: You’re a single mother of 2, and a Momtrepreneur. What are some of your top tips for mothers who want to embark on a similar journey as yours?
A: Work hard and stay consistent. Don’t give up. Always smile and be positive. The world is not over; it is merely your oyster. Sometimes you will feel as though you are alone, despite the many people you know. Never fret, and do not give up. Believe in yourself, your achievements and your capabilities, and rest assured all will fall into place. There is a reason for everything that happens to you, and it will prepare you to become the person you are truly meant to be. Live to be the best version of yourself. Have a support system around you; don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need to. Be the light; show the light.
Q: Scrap Your Life – A Photo Book album. When did you get this idea, tell us a little more about this business and why each one should get a scrap book done for themselves or their loved one?
A: This idea stemmed after I produced a scrapbook for my youngest son, Lashaun. I realised how long it took for me to complete after my sister had initially started it for me as a gift. It is not easy being a busy mum looking after your kids or working and still having to put together a scrapbook remembering various dates and events. Nowadays, pictures lie around in your phone, laptop and different memory cards. Assembling them into organised files on hard drive upon hard drive is tedious. When will we ever go back and see all these memories, moreover? The point of having such beautiful memories is to share them with our loved ones—be it family or friends. Hence, by coming up with the concept “Scrap Yo Life,” which has an edgy, trendy twist to it, parents can feel comfortable and at ease, send us their photos and baby scans, etc..and we will put it together into a wonderful, sentimental work of art for them. Hassle-free and at a cost-effective price, they won’t regret, and it is well worth the investment. They now can put their scrapbook on display in the living room to show off to guests and various family members. It is also one of the best gifts to offer to friends and co-workers.
Q: Future plans – where do you and your companies go from here?
A: Soon, the first official, credible and recognized Women’s Entrepreneur Awards under Lion MEC “Achieve” will empower and uplift many women in the region. Moreover, soon, I will have a retreat website for all the hippies out there who would like to be advised about various retreats that serve different purposes across the globe. For now, I would like to focus my energy and time to the company and the above and ensure its continuous success. I have my kids to look after, cherish and help unfold to manifest into their true purpose and highest potential on this Earth. I also aim to further grow as a Light Worker and be a source of healing, inspiration and love to many out there who seek and yearn to heal on a mental and spiritual level.
Q: What is the one thing you attribute your success to?
A: I attribute my success to many factors, including my education, experiences, children, family and everything I have been through. Nevertheless, one of the most important elements or factors would be the consistent support from my parents and namely my father who really motivated me and uplifted me through darker times during my teenage years. He mentored me and helped me come out of the dark into the light and inspired me to unfold and be the woman I am today. I owe him inevitably for being my rock and always being there for me. My mother, too, has shown me unconditional love and support, and I am forever in debt to her too. My previous Business Partner and best friend, Dominic, was also a powerful influence during my first media business venture, having taught me a lot and inspired me in ways indescribable stemming from his experiences and overall personality. I will always cherish these people deep down in my heart for all they have taught me, influenced me and inspired me with on a very spiritual and mental level.
