1. Choosing a Strategy
2. Alternative Routes
3. Understanding the Business
4. Passionate in your Business
There are many aspects to this profession. Although the former career may not seem as glamourous as the latter, it certainly will make your life less stressful. To create your own label takes a lot of time, dedication and hard work. Not to mention living just above the poverty line for several years.
A fashion designer is someone who loves to study fashion trends, sketch designs, select materials, and have a part in all the production aspects of their designs. They contribute to the creation of millions, if not billions of pieces of clothing and accessories purchased by consumers on a yearly basis.
Choosing a Strategy:
There are so many different ways to embark upon a fashion career as there are different styles of design. You need to figure out which style you would go for. Must have a good visual imagination and are able to think in three-dimensions and put their ideas into garments.
Let’s be real, school’s not for everyone. If you’re just looking to get a job in the fashion industry not a career as a designer, you probably don’t need to go school. Best way to become a fashion designer, first apply for internship at a fashion house and work your way up. If you research there are many famous designers started out as interns for example Hedi Slimane, Balanceaga’s Nicolas Ghesquiere. Just send your portfolio to the fashion house you are interested in. Reminder, important to note that the competition is fierce, unless you have great contacts or went to a top fashion school.
Understanding the Business:
It is not only about being a great fashion designer but you also need to know how to run your business. It’s important to be aware of the business climate and understanding behind it. If you want to run your own company, you need to be extremely organized and learn at least the basics of economics.
Passionate about your Business:
Number one thing to become a fashion designer you must be passionate what you do in any business. Always dress to impress where ever you go from events, galas, birthday parties and meetings. Be very playful and feel confident and put together outfits.
A fashion designer takes part in just about every aspect of bringing fashion to the public. Creating the basic design can be done in different ways. The fashion designer’s next step is to take the rough sketch or model and develop a more specific working pattern. Usually, the designer will make a rough model of the design by creating a toile. This is made by sewing inexpensive material (like muslin) to make a rough model of the design. Large design houses hire their own pattern-makers, tailors, and sewers who create the master patterns and sew the prototypes.
Fashion design is a form of art. To work as a designer, you should have an artistic and creative personality. You also have to be good at drawing and able to express your ideas in sketches. You don’t necessarily have to be a great artist, but you must have some special skills for combining colors, tones and shades. You also have to be able to work with fabric and use textiles in a creative and original manner. Fashion designers have a good visual imagination and are able to think in three-dimensions and put their ideas into garments. Fashion designers have to be aware of the fashion market requirements. They also have to be interested in art, visit art galleries and interact with all kinds of artists whenever they have the opportunity. A designer should also have some knowledge and experience of tailoring (cutting, draping, sewing etc.) and be able to tell the difference between different fabric quality levels. A good understanding of the audience’s lifestyle and customer needs and requirements is also needed in fashion design.
